Hot and humid is the message of the day Monday, June 20 - the hottest day of the week with widespread high temperatures in the upper 90s - according to the National Weather Service in Duluth.
In addition, Crow Wing and Cass counties are in a slight to marginal risk of severe weather late Monday afternoon and evening. A few storms may become strong to severe, mainly in northern Minnesota, the weather service said, adding the main threat from these storms is large hail or damaging winds.
The weather service shares the following key messages as heat advisories are in effect Monday across the state, including Crow Wing and Cass counties:
Monday's predicted high is 98 degrees in the Brainerd lakes area and 95 degrees in northern Crow Wing and Cass counties. Heat indices of 95 degrees to near 105 degrees are forecast across the region, and at 100-103 degrees in Crow Wing County.
Little relief from the heat is expected overnight with lows in the 70s and 80s for most locations. Not being able to cool down overnight greatly increases heat stress on the body, the weather service advised.
The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature - an indicator of heat related stress on the body at work or play in direct sunlight - is in the mid-80s for the area, meaning canceling outdoor work and exercise is suggested. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature takes into account temperature, humidity, wind speed, sun angle and cloud cover.
With many events scheduled later this week - including Nisswa Turtle Races, Pine River Dam Days, the Cass County Fair in Pine River, the Majestic Pines Artisans and Crafters Market in Nisswa and Lakes Jam at Brainerd International Raceway, here is the week's forecast, according to the National Weather Service in Duluth:
